I'm still working my way to a regular weekly cadence, so thank you to the hundreds of you who have stuck with me as I find the voice and timing for this newsletter!
WORK
My work brings me a lot of joy. Seeing my frontline advisory clients reach new goals. Seeing my brand partners connect with a new audience. Connecting with others at speaking engagements. And helping my HR Tech advisory partners grow.
And I've been extraordinarily lucky with clients. I do recognize putting myself out there - both on LinkedIn and at industry events - helps a bit.
But for all the clients I have onboarded, there are even more clients I didn't get. And there are three large projects I was talking with potential clients about over the past year, with each one having conversations over three to four months, that did not go forward.
That sucks. But it's completely normal.
For every client a consultant or fractional leader has, there is usually a trail of conversations that went nowhere. Projects that didn't happen.
That's business. In corporate, I worked for someone else. Working for myself now, I'm technically a vendor. So I get ghosted. I have conversations drag out. Contracts end.
It's not all sunshine and tulips.
But I'll take it!!! I'll take the good with the bad and the uncertain. Because it's mine.
I'm a terrible salesperson. I haven't (yet) had to do real business development. But I'm learning. Someone I love to learn from? Sam Eaton. She's got a masterclass coming up on May 20 - check out the link below if you would like to learn more!
About ten years ago, I started to break out of my "paper first" mindset and embrace the thought of community. I've since been a part of a number of communities, and built or co-built several communities of thousands of amazing people.
But sometimes, being a part of something - not building it, but embracing the wonderful result of someone else's hard work in building - is pretty amazing.
In 2022 I met Angela Cheng-Cimini 鄭婷婷 for the first time at Transform. We ended up becoming fast friends, and shared a ride to the airport where she told me about this group called Troop HR. She introduced me to founder Tracy Avin, and the rest is history! (pictured in the photo L-R, Angela, Tracy and me!)
This week I had the extraordinary opportunity to go to my first Troop HR retreat at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton in Naples. It was a perfect blend of learning, solo time, and down time with friends and new connections. I can't wait for the next one.
But there's so much more to Troop than the retreat. Want to know more about one of my favorite communities? Check out the link below!
A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I decided on a Tuesday to go to Disney - that Thursday. This is the life I wanted when I went out on my own! I work hard, and I also travel as much as I can - and go as often as I can to Disney. This was the one weekend we were going to be able to do it before the crush of work travel, visiting family, a college graduation and an epic family trip.
So we hotel hopped, booking whatever DVC hotel was available (For the die hard Disney fans, one night BLT, one night BCV, one night RIR.)
We had LOTS of Joffreys of course. But our one morning in the Magic Kingdom, the Starbucks hardly had any line! So this newsletter exclusive coffee pic (I think it's exclusive anyway!) is of my espresso frappuccino on a not-very-busy Main Street USA!
Have a great rest of your week!
WHERE YOU CAN FIND ME!
I've had some requests to share things that I am doing, so in many newsletters you'll see a list like this, with some of my upcoming events.
Next week, I have two webinars coming up!I'm partnering with Select Software Reviews and Guusto for "Employee Recognition on the Front Lines" and with GoCo and Bravely for "From First Day to Future Leader."
Both are free and both offer credits. I hope to see you at one or more of them!
On June 4 and 5, I'll be in Charlotte NC with my BFF For the VII FSI Training Conference for High Performance in Football at Bank of America Stadium. CPOs speaking at a conference for soccer? Yes! We'll be talking about the relationship between coaching for performance in sports and coaching for performance at work. Click the button for more information!
I also have two new things coming up this summer - both around AI - that I'm excited to announce. Stay tuned for that soon! And, a huge announcement coming up about something I've been co-building!
