Vol 2, Number 1

www.traciesponenberg.com

Welcome!

To 2025!

I'm trying out a new numbering configuration. This may change. The layout and format will change, just not today.

2024 was the year I launched my business, and the year I tried different things.

2025 is the year that I focus on what I love and what I'm great at. (Or at least very good and improving!)

So with that, I've added a couple new sections - where you can find me in the coming few months, and a non-coffee recommendation. Let me know what you think!

In the next week's I'll be adding and changing some sections, though the basic sections of work, community and coffee will remain the same. And thanks to your feedback, I'll keep them largely focused on my thoughts and experiences and stories.

So on to what's going on in 2025!

WORK

In 2017, I gave my first solo presentation. It happened to be on a pretty big breakout stage at HR Tech in Vegas, and was all about HR Tech for small and mid-size businesses.

In 2018, I did my first DisruptHR talk, which then became the foundation for my most-given keynote.

Those two things formed the foundation for my "Paper-First to People-First" ™️ keynote.

And that keynote has grown and changed over the years, and is now forming the basis of some of the work that I'll be doing. I want to change how HR leaders are viewed, particularly in frontline companies, and how they view themselves.

My most recent version of the keynote featured 16 things that helped make me a better leader. With the podcast (that will also be a new newsletter series and later a book and course), I was aiming for 25. I'm at 30+ now because I keep thinking of the things that shaped me, and people who have changed me.

My guests will mostly be people who have impacted me personally. Who have challenged and changed me - and hopefully they can do the same for you.

Whether you are an HR pro or not, I hope you'll check it out. These unscripted, unfiltered conversations are going to be long enough to inspire, and short enough to keep your attention.

And here's a newsletter sneak peak on some of my confirmed guests: Alex Seiler (obviously.) Mental health at work expert and author Melissa Doman. DEI expert Torin Ellis. People expert and 2X twin mom Jessica Winder. Future of work expert Josh Drean. And more to come! I can't wait to share this with you all!

COMMUNITY

I was thinking about a post my BFF Alex Seiler wrote a few months back about community.

After ignoring community for much of my life and career, as I changed from a compliance-driven leader to a human-centric leader, I embraced community.

That was never easier for me than during the pandemic.

Being an introvert (and later to find out Autistic), interacting over zoom was seemingly tailor-made for me. It allowed me to be braver. It allowed me to be bolder. When I wear turtlenecks I don't even look nervous! (Reddening in my neck is my only tell when I am nervous. That's fine for this time of year, not so great in July!)

I jumped both feet in to a number of communities. I co-created some - some that are still going (shoutout to the HR Rebels with Michelle Strasburger), some not (remember Clubhouse? Francisco, Jeff, Nicky and I LOVED hosting our Friday "HR on the House" audio events.)

As 2025 starts, I find myself re-evaluating these communities. Where do I belong? Where can I learn? Where can I help? Where should I be that brings me joy?

Some I'll stay in, some I may leave. All served an important part in my life.

One thing is for sure. However you define it, community is an important part of life and work.

I've left the survey up another week - let me know what you'd like to see in future newsletters, and feel free to share your favorite communities there as well!

COFFEE

I love to eat healthy. And I mostly do. Except I also love chocolate and muffins and pancakes. And some combination of those? Heaven.

On New Year's Day, we went for coffee to a place that we had been to months before - Odysea in Bristol, NH. It's the rare gem (at least around here) that not only has good espresso, but also great food! We needed to test it for breakfast, so we went again this weekend.

And the Nutella strawberry crepe was not exactly the protein-fueled breakfast I try to eat every day, but it was incredibly delicious! (The coffee was pretty good, but not quite as good as New Year's Day! However, we will definitely go back.)

Non-Coffee Recommendation!

My friend Josh Drean and his co-Author Deborah Perry Piscione have a brand new book coming out from Harvard Business Publishing on January 28 - and it's a must read!

"Employment is Dead: How Disruptive Technologies are Revolutionizing the Way We Work" isn't even out yet, and it's already a #1 Amazon bestseller! Preorder (link below) and you'll not only get a great book, but you might get to read a little more about someone you know (who loves coffee!)

WHERE YOU CAN FIND ME!

Welcome to this brand new section! Like the rest of the newsletter, this will grow and change. But for now, I wanted to include a list of the places and spaces I'll be in this winter. I hope to see you at some!

  • January 21: TEXTIO Webinar (with Rocki Howard and Anessa Fike) - Implementing a People-First Culture
  • January 28: LinkedIn Live (with Alex Seiler) - Ask Us Anything!
  • February 5/6: Atlanta - stay tuned for a possible in-person announcement!
  • February 19-21: Palm Springs, CA - Keynote at IDCO Principal's Conference
  • March 6: Boston, MA - Modern People Leader Live! (attending)
  • March 10-12: Indianapolis, IN - Faculty, University of Innovative Distribution at Purdue University
  • March 17-19: Las Vegas - TRANSFORM (panel with Alex Seiler)

And some more to be added soon!

Until next week!
